Admission Requirements

Standard Admission

1. Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. 2. Passing score on the Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam. 3. Passing score on the Accuplacer Test. 4. Successful interview with ABM College Admissions.

Mature Admission

I recently graduated at ABM College and I can say that I learned a lot. I had good teachers and there was good management of the school. After one week of my practicum, I got a job as a Medical Office Assistant in one of busiest family and walk-in clinic here in Calgary.

Course Curriculum

Microsoft Office

This training will help students to effectively utilize all the features of Microsoft Office products, and increase productivity. Students become well versed in the Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook applications. This 4-week module helps students sharpen their computer and Office skills and prepare for the main course modules.

Diagnostic Tests

In this course, the students get an introduction about different lab and diagnostic tests. Patient preparation and the importance of these tests is discussed in detail. This course will prepare the health care professionals for their role in the medical office regarding booking and processing orders related to diagnostic tests.

Health Care Plans

This course provides an introduction to the provincial/territorial health care plans. Common insured and uninsured health services are discussed. Eligibility, format, application, and purpose of health cards in Canada are discussed. Private insurance providers and health care service benefits are identified.

Billing

This course provides an introduction to the way provincial and territorial ministries process health claims. The student will be able to understand the billing submission process and the stages of the billing cycle. The important role assumed by the administrative health professionals in the claim submission process is clearly outlined.

Scheduling

This course highlights the most important role of an administrative health professional in a medical office setting which is appointment scheduling, both manual and electronic. This course covers several appointment booking styles and their advantages and disadvantages. How to manage booking specialist appointments and diagnostic tests is outlined.

Hospital Procedures

This course outlines the organizational structure and different departments of a hospital. Students will understand the vital responsibilities of a clinical secretary and their roles. The process involved in admissions, discharge, and transfer of the patient will be covered in this course. Procedures related to oxygenation and inhalation, ileostomy, colostomy, mammograms, CT, and MRI are all covered in great detail.

Medical Software

Students will learn about the role of medical software in medical documentation. Students are prepared to work in a computerized environment. Students work hands-on software like Med Access and ACCURO.

Medical Terminology

Students are introduced to anatomy and physiology of all the human body systems. Students learn from a cellular level to detailed structures including all the body systems and functions. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to work in a health care environment as medical language is the language of health care.

Accounting

This module covers basic accounting principles including debits and credits, balance sheet and Income statements. It outlines and explains the normal balances in accounts and explains in depth accounts payable procedures.

Health Information and Record Management

This course introduces the students to the composition of health chart. The various documents of health record and its management are discussed. The legal aspect of a health chart and the Privacy Legislature are introduced. The importance of confidentiality is emphasized. Various components of a medical chart are discussed in detail.

Transcription

This course elaborates the role of a medical transcriptionist in the healthcare field. It highlights the professional skills need to transcribe accurately. It introduces various technologies that are used in this field. This course prepares the student to support physicians in health care documentation.

Standards of Safety

This course covers the concepts of health and safety. It details strategies about infection control and disease prevention. It explains in detail the concept of Nosocomial infections. Students are given an introduction about the chain of infection and modes of transmission of infection. The role of an AHP in storing and handling vaccines, sanitization, sterilization, and asepsis is discussed in detail.

Keyboarding and Data entry

Keyboarding the ability to input information at a keyboard, while typing. It is an essential skill required for data entry which is the process of entering data and updating information into a database. This course will introduce touch typing and allow the student to practice to help improve the speed and accuracy in typing.

Communication for Health

This course covers the different methods of communicating in a medical office. The proper use of fax and telephone is discussed in detail. The vital role of telephone manners in effective client communication is discussed. Strategies to deal with different types of callers and taking telephone messages is emphasized. Proper protocol for writing emails is outlined. The accuracy of written communication is highlighted. Face to face communication is discussed in detail.

Role, Ethics and Professionalism

This course highlights the dynamic and vital role of an Administrative Health Professional (AHP). The evolving role of the administrative health professional is explained in length. Identification of skills and desirable attributes of the administrative health professional are focused, as well as an overview of different employment options. Ethical principles and decision making are also discussed as required within the healthcare environment, while attitude and professional mannerism is highlighted.

Practicum

Students will gain practical and hands-on experience to apply the knowledge and skills learned in class to real-world experiences in a professional capacity during a practicum placement.

Materia Medica / Pharmacology

The study of Materia Medica / Pharmacology equips students with knowledge about medications, their uses, side effects, and mode of action. Students will learn about these drugs in a systematic way as they are used in the treatment of different diseases.
