ABM College Hosts Career Fair 2023

ABM College hosted its latest career fair on May 25th, and it was full of valuable information from industry experts! The fair was attended by many job seekers, as well as representatives from a wide range of companies and organizations. Employers from a variety of industries, including healthcare, finance, technology, and more, were present at the fair. They were eager to connect with job seekers, and many of them had one-to-one talks with the attendees.

Guests had the opportunity to speak with representatives from different companies, learn about available job openings and career opportunities, and network with other professionals in their fields. ABM College worked hard to ensure that the event was well-organized and beneficial for all involved. The college’s career services team provided job seekers with resources and guidance to help them prepare for the fair, such as resume reviews and interview tips. They also worked with employers to understand their hiring needs and preferences. Participating employers included Manpower Alberta, MCG Careers Inc., Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, Alivio Care, Compassion Senior Care, Wingman Direct Marketing, Revital Health Physio, BrightPath Kids, Massage ExpertsMassage Addict, Rabboni Support Services, Ready Willing & Able + More! The event was followed up by a career talk from industry experts.

To offer insight about “How to Stand Out in a Competitive Job Market,” a career talk was arranged and Norman Poon from BitWide and Angelah Kusero from Manpower Alberta shared their thoughts on how Linkedin can be a vital resource for building networks and looking for jobs. They emphasized how people from all industries are active on Linkedin and how it can be a beneficial networking tool for you. They suggested having a polished Linkedin profile will leave a good impact on hiring managers and also stressed how vital it is to have an updated resume on your profile. 

About the Experts

Norman Poon

Norman Poon is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) with over 15 years of experience in banking, retail, health care, and technology sector. He is currently the Co-founder & Chief Customer Officer with BitWide. BitWide is a global fractional sales provider for startups to medium-sized companies. Norman is also a sessional human resources instructor with the Chiu School of Business at Bow Valley College in Calgary and the Co-Chair of DiverseCities. He regularly speaks with new immigrants and people who are career transitioning with organizations like Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, Immigrant Services Calgary, TechCareers Calgary, and Calgary Career Hub. He is even a member of the Alberta Anti-Racism Advisory Council.

Angelah Kusero

Another speaker, Angelah Kusero, the Workforce Development Manager at Manpower, is dedicated to promoting the integration and inclusion of job seekers in Canada. With a focus on six programs in southern Alberta, including emPOWER – Women in Construction, TECHCareers, Cybersecurity for Immigrants, Career Leap, FINtech Careers, and Training for Work. She helps individuals upskill, train, and connect with employment opportunities. As a champion for organizations like the Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC), Women In Need Society, and Prairie Centre of Excellence in Mentoring, Angelah strives to uncover individuals’ unique talents, foster inclusive communities, and bring out the best in others. 

Final Thoughts

Overall the career fair was a resounding success as employers and job seekers got a chance to meet people from different companies and learn about their available positions. Additionally, the talk was fascinating as both speakers shared their experiences to help everyone understand the skills and strategies required to crack an interview. After the talk, there was a question-answer round which was open to all and was an excellent opportunity to share thoughts and difficulties attendees have faced while applying for or attending an interview.
