Calgary Stampede Powwow

The Stampede Powwow is a brand new event for the Calgary Stampede. The one-of-a-kind event will feature competitive dancing, singing, drumming, and other performances. It’s one of Canada’s largest powwows and will take place from July 12th to July 14th.

Competitors will engage in different types of Indigenous dance styles such as Men’s Chicken, Men’s Grass, Men and Women’s Fancy, Men’s and Women’s Traditional, Cowboy Special, and Women’s Jingle, and will also showcase talent from drummers and singers who will produce  music for the dancing competition.

It will take place at the Saddledome for the three days and will display Indigenous talent not only from Canada, but from across the United States as well. Those who win the competition will receive up to $175,000 in prize money. The powwow is free to view for anyone who has already bought a ticket or has entry to the Stampede.

Check out the Super Wheel

One of the key new features at this year’s Stampede is the Super Wheel. It’s North America’s largest travelling Ferris wheel, being 150 feet tall. The 36 climate-controlled gondolas can fit up to six people each, and you can get an amazing view of the Stampede Grounds and even the city and the mountains from up top.

Making its debut at the Calgary Stampede and only staying for the duration of it, you should catch this ride for the limited time that it’s here. According to North American Midway Entertainment that owns the Super Wheel, the giant fairground ride has to travel on 20 tractor-trailer loads to each location!

Freestyle Motocross

Getting a glimpse of the Freestyle Motocross is one of the most interesting experiences you can have at the Calgary Stampede. This high-adrenaline show will have you on edge as you watch motorcycle athletes from all over the world showcase their skills and perform risky stunts. It can get crowded so make sure you find a good viewing spot before it starts!

You can find it at the Monster Energy Compound which is right across from the Saddledome. The shows run every day at the following times: 1:40, 4:00, 7:30, and 10:40 p.m, with extra slots running on Sunday, July 10th, and Wednesday, July 13th at noon.

Grandstand Show

This is one of the key highlights of the Calgary Stampede. Every year, the Grandstand Show has something new and exciting to offer, from pyrotechnics to acrobatics, music, dance, and an amazing fireworks display at the very end. The evening show is a combination of chuckwagon races and a dazzling spectacle.

This year’s theme for the Grandstand Show is called AMPLIFIED and “will celebrate the rich, deep, and vivid journey of building Calgary through performance, taking audiences through a musical journey,” according to the Stampede website.

Tickets for the Grandstand Show are separate from the entry tickets into the Stampede. However, if you purchase tickets to the Grandstand Show, you will also get entry into the Stampede along with it. The show and fireworks happen every night for the duration of the Calgary Stampede at the GMC Stadium.
