Dreams Don’t Work Unless you Do – John C. Maxwell
Now that your education is complete, it’s time to gather some job search tips to help you get your dream job. You can rest easy because you made it through the most challenging part of your career journey, the education. The next chapter is entering the workforce within your industry and paving your path forward to success.
Carrie Corbin, employment counsellor at ABM College, says once you have done your research and decided what kind of job you can do, it’s time to begin the job hunting process. It’s important to remember that each industry may require a different tactic to get a job.
“Each Career is a little bit different for example Health Care Aide you might find applying online is really good but Business Administration you might find that you need to change your tactics a little bit and go drop in person with a targeted resume,” explains Corbin.
Once you have an idea of the jobs you want to do, you can start looking for them.
Here Are Five Job Search Tips to Get You Started
Networking in Person
This is still one of the most effective ways to spread the word that you’re looking for a job. Networking will get you connected to potential employers. Your friends or family members can have contacts who will hire you. The number one way people discover a job is through a referral of some sort.
Corbin explains that in our career training workshops, a lot of students gave feedback that networking in person helped them find employment in the past. She says this is the first step you should take once you begin the job hunting process.
“Friends, acquaintances, friends of family, anybody close to you, anybody that you’re connected with just let them know that you are looking and available and let them know what you can offer,” Corbin advises.
Professional Networking
Corbin explains that another important part of networking you can do, is to build up professional contacts on Linkden.
“The second type of networking is through Linkden, so it’s a professional network and it’s often used by the more formal careers,” says Corbin.
Start by brushing up your own profile and adding all of your skills and work experience. Treat this like a digital resume that you can display to potential employers. Once everything is set up to highlights your strengths and qualifications, you can begin contacting industry professionals. This should be done in a more friendly approach, to build a relationship, rather than to directly ask for a job.
Company websites
You can also look for job opportunities directly on company websites. This is an excellent way to keep up=to=date with what your potential employers are doing. Most companies have a job posting section where they list recent openings.
Job alerts
This goes hand-in-hand with looking at company websites for jobs. You can set up job alerts and be notified right away as soon as an opening is posted. This can be set up directly for company websites, so you never miss a posting.
Job alerts can also be set up for search engines such as Google, and more specific job search sites. Indeed and Glassdoor offer job alerts which can be customized and sent to your inbox.
Going to Companies
Corbin recommends trying this option as well for job search because you can make a personal connection.
“You’re there personally and maybe you can talk with them and make a connection and they’ll remember that much better than a piece of paper,” She says.
