International Day of Education- The word education denotes the act of teaching knowledge to others and the act of receiving knowledge from someone else. Everyone in this universe has a right to study and gain knowledge, even though many are still deprived of it and want to be educated like others. Education is a cornerstone of progress and development, and it is essential to ensure that everyone has access to it. Education is a powerful tool that can be used to create a better future for everyone.
International Day of Education:
January 24, 2024, will be an International Day of Education. Every year, January 24 is celebrated as International Education Day worldwide to mark education’s vitality in ensuring development and peace. Officially, it was adopted in 2018 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The main motive behind this day was to bring global peace and sustainable development. Initially, in 2018 only 59 member countries decided to celebrate this but in the following year 2019, January 24 was the actual first celebration.
The theme of International Day of Education 2025:
This year marks the 7th anniversary of International Day of Education and the theme for this year is “AI and Education: Preserving human agency in the world of automation.” As we are in the world of automation and Artificial Intelligence, this topic of artificial intelligence is chosen to highlight the growing impact of AI and automation on education and the ambitious contenders. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, decided the theme. She is inviting all UNESCO’s member states to invest in training students and teachers to utilize this new technology and excel in their respective fields.
An official statement-
“AI offers major opportunities for education, provided that its deployment in schools is guided by clear ethical principles. To reach its full potential, this technology must complement the human and social dimensions of learning, rather than replace them. It must become a tool at the service of teachers and pupils, with the main objective being their autonomy and well-being.”
Objectives of International Day of Education:
Let’s clarify the objectives and origins of this International Day of Education to better understand them.
- It also seeks to foster critical AI literacy development, providing educators and learners with the essential skills to understand, utilize, and shape AI technologies.
- Presently, it focuses on the new advancements that are in existence because of AI in the field of education including teaching, learning, education administration and assessment.
Challenges to Achieve Education
Education is a tool that can help you escape from poverty and find a way to a better future. According to reports by un.org, a staggering number of children and adolescents worldwide face significant barriers in accessing education, with:
- Approximately 244 million are out of school;
- 617 million unable to read and perform basic math;
- Less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school;
- A substantial four million children and youth refugees lack access to education.
Their right to education is being violated, and this is unacceptable. Without education, gender equality and good life opportunities for all are impossible. This leads to no success in a country’s growth. Lack of education leads to an inclination toward poverty, thus leaving millions of children, youth, and adults behind.
