ABM College’s Education Assistant Diploma in Calgary helps prepare students to be successful in various classroom settings. Students in the education assistant course will learn about adolescent development, curriculum development, assessment and behavioral management, as well as other instrumental skills needed to be a well-rounded and successful professional. Students who choose to begin their journey to become an education assistant will have the option to choose a range of important roles within both public and private education systems.

The Education Assistant course at ABM College is designed to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge to meet the industry demands and trends. This diploma program includes a four-week practicum where students gain practical experience in a real-life setting. Education Assistant Course Curriculum

This section focuses on the use of different types of instruction strategies used within a classroom. Students will learn how to plan, execute, and straighten teaching methods that promote social and intellectual development. Child learning and effective school leadership skills will be emphasized. Group exercises are used to help students design curriculum plans and explore the best methods of implementation. This module will also emphasize the integration of assistive technology within the curriculum, and how this technology can be used in schools to enhance the learning of students with challenges.

Students learn how to help children read and write, particularly in ELL contexts. They will have opportunities to explore different issues related to teaching literacy to young children including oral and written language development, emergent literacy/bi-literacy, reading fluency, reading comprehension, phonics and vocabulary development, early writing acquisition, differentiation of instruction, children’s literature, and assessment in early literacy. They will learn effective reading and writing strategies, parental involvement, and reading-writing connections.

Students focus on developing an understanding of the strengths and needs of individuals with severe disabilities and effective instructional practices for teaching these students. This course teaches students about how to apply effective instructional strategies that meet the unique needs of students with severe disabilities, such as specific areas, including addressing health and medical needs of students and teaching communication skills; personal care skills; academics; home and community skills; and social, leisure, and recreational skills.
